"Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is (Matt. 6:22-23)!"
Does what we watch on the television and big screens matter to our spiritual walk?
It is a question I have had to ponder in the last two years. The more I ponder this question, the ...less and less appealing certain movies and shows are to me because I can no longer justify watching them as pure entertainment.
I was challenged by this verse before I even looked it up this morning by trying to watch a Netflix original movie. Now Netflix is becoming porn-lite with their original programming; both movies and "TV" series. If the rating says TV-MA, it is a pretty good indication that there will be nudity and sex involved. "Polar" lived up to those expectations.
It is not just nudity that poses a problem to my soul and to the verse in question, but movies with hidden social agendas which go against the teachings of the Bible. Can we as Christians continue watching such lies and dismiss it off as just entertainment? Or do we need to take a stand with what we our viewing with our eyes?
If the above verses are any indication, what we see with our eyes is indeed harmful to our own bodies. Not only does it dampen our light for the world to see, but it also fools us into believing that is okay to watch whatever. Notice Jesus' warning about how the light we think we have is actually darkness from all we take in, and because of that deceit Jesus ponders just how deep our darkness is.
I am not making a case for legalism where we strike down all media. There are good movies out there. Most just seem to have been made before I was even born. In the last two weeks, I have been enjoying movies made during the 50's-late 70's featuring Gary Cooper, John Wayne, James Stewart, and many other classic movie stars long since passed away. In their movies I still find the action and humor I look for in movies altogether, and women are still beautiful, but they don't have to display their beauty by dropping their clothes. And even the violence is significantly toned down compared to the eerie realistic violence of today's movies.
The more I become older, for I turn 40 this summer, the more I realize what I am viewing is important. And the more I realize what I choose to not view is even more important. When I choose not to continue watching porn-lite smut on Netflix, I am ensuring I protect my mind, body, and above all else my soul residing in me from this perverted darkness. The more I walk away from movies producing an anti-Biblical agenda, the more I am protecting my mind from lies this world has to offer.
Protect your eyes. They're more than just for visual purposes.
Until next time...
